Since 2008, RIMA has partnered with mayors and outstanding educators to open Blackstone Valley Prep Mayoral Academy (five campuses), Achievement First Providence Mayoral Academy (two campuses), and RISE Prep (one campus) – together serving students throughout Rhode Island. Mayoral academies are committed to a culture of high expectations and high supports for all children, a longer school day that includes the arts and enrichments, and a regional approach to student populations that allows for children of all backgrounds to learn and play together.
Blackstone Valley Prep (BVP) Mayoral Academy is an intentionally diverse network of tuition-free public schools chartered by the Rhode Island Department of Education. As a growing network that is part of the Charter School Growth Fund portfolio, BVP offers a high quality public school choice to the families of Central Falls, Cumberland, Lincoln and Pawtucket and currently serves over 1,000 scholars in grades K-9. A member of the Rhode Island Mayoral Academies network, BVP’s mission is to prepare every scholar for success in college and the world beyond.
Achievement First Providence Mayoral Academy and Illuminar Mayoral Academy are part of the Achievement First network, a high-performing group of 29 tuition-free, K-12 public charter schools in Connecticut, New York, and Rhode Island. Achievement First believes that all children, regardless of race or socioeconomic status, can succeed if they have access to a great education.
Achievement First Providence currently serves 272 students in grades K-2 (growing to K-4) from the communities of Providence, North Providence, Cranston, and Warwick.
Achievement First Illuminar Mayoral Academy is opening in August 2015 to serve grades K-1 (growing to K-4) from the communities of Providence, North Providence, Cranston, and Warwick. The school will temporarily co-locate in the same building as AF Providence.
AF is a fully “open source” organization. We believe that the education sector can go further faster when everyone works together, and sharing proven resources is an easy and high-impact way to help as many students as possible. Our new open source website — www.achievementfirst.org/opensource — the first of its kind in the education sector, allowing anyone to access our instructional, operational and organizational resources.
You can also access and log into our curriculum hub, which is regularly used by RI teachers and college faculty, here.
Navigator is AF’s newest open source program, designed specifically to partner with other district and charter schools on their journey to breakthrough results in math achievement. Through Navigator, schools will have access to Achievement First’s complete elementary math program (including all curricula, assessments, and related resources), as well as 15 months of ongoing professional development, coaching and implementation support.
The program will launch in June 2017 and is available to elementary schools in Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York City, and Springfield, MA.
RISE Prep Mayoral Academy opened in fall 2015 with its founding Kindergarten class. RISE Prep serves the communities of Woonsocket, North Smithfield, and Burrillville and will grow to grade 8. The school focuses on the 3 Cs of College Preparation, Character Development, and Community Service.
